When I started my data science side hustle back in 2012,

I used my credibility as a licensed professional engineer to land some pretty sweet gigs. Within the first few months, I was doing projects for IBM and the UN!

Granted, the pay was a small pittance of what my expertise was actually worth, but my startup was profitable and growing.

These early experiences confirmed my belief that founders could generate wealth without being completely reliant on external investors.


By 2013, things were going well enough in my startup that I decided to take advantage of the freedom and autonomy it had established for me.

Declining further interview requests from Facebook Menlo Park, I quit my day job, moved to Thailand, and lived off of $600/month while I bootstrapped my startup's future success from (almost) scratch.

Life was easy then. I didn’t make much money, but I had no responsibilities and, hell, companies paid me to fly all over the world, business class… My dream had come true (I mean, who doesn’t dream of spending their 30s getting paid to travel the world while living out of a suitcase?)

But then in late 2015, I hit a fork in the road.

I was on my way back to my Asia HQ, from a business trip in San Francisco, when suddenly I discovered that I was pregnant with my first child.

I knew right then and there...

I had some very tough decisions to make, fast!

I immediately knew my startup needed to evolve.  To align with my values and vision, my business needed to start making more money on a repeatable basis, all without running me into the ground.

I wanted to build a business model that respected the autonomy and independence of founders, and I knew I needed help to achieve that.

I’d already tried a lot of things that just hadn’t worked, like:

With an infant on one side, and my newly-wed husband on the other, I got to work.
