Individually, it\u2019s about being empowered to make more informed decisions every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Becoming data-driven is a journey. If you possess most (or at least some) of these qualities, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019re moving in the right direction:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>You don\u2019t like making decisions without a clear understanding of what the data is saying.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re not one to rely on anecdotal or peer evidence, or a gut feeling. You use data as the core part of your decision-making process, and won\u2019t move forward until you have data to support your decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>You\u2019re adaptable and willing to change. <\/b>Being data-driven means you understand that your strategy will CONSTANTLY be changing depending on what the data says. You\u2019re okay with this and thrive in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>You don\u2019t shy away from using data tools. <\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may need some h<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elp with the numbers from time to time. The reality is not everyone is an analyst. But, you ensure you have an arsenal of tools that help you manage your data and act on it. Tools that are proactive, simple, and personal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re still reading this, nodding your head, and thinking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cyes, that\u2019s me to a tee!\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; let\u2019s get into some key terms that should be in every data-driven individual\u2019s lexicon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Difference Between Metrics, KPIs, and Key Results<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To kick-off our discussion on the difference between metrics, KPIs, and key results &#8211; let\u2019s start by defining metrics, then move into KPIs, then key results. Stick with us to uncover the rhythm and reason behind that ordering.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What are Metrics?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexico.com\/definition\/metric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Oxford,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a metric is simply <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a system or standard for measurement.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A metric can be defined by one or more measures. Essentially, a metric is a communication tool, where we&#8217;re all agreeing upon the same standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Metrics are defined by something called <\/span><b>unit value.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The unit value is simply the quantitative value that a unit of measurement takes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me illustrate with two examples.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, let\u2019s use a simple spatial example.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States is approximately 2800 miles wide. The <\/span><b>unit value<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for this would be 2800, and the <\/span><b>metric<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describing the width of the country would be miles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretty simple, right?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now let&#8217;s look at a more realistic example, one you might see on a day-to-day basis as a data professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s assume you&#8217;re a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/data-mania.com\/blog\/self-taught-data-product-manager-curriculum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data Product Manager<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and you&#8217;re reporting that your application had 50,000 daily active users. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unit value in this scenario would be 50,000 &#8211;\u00a0 and the metric would be daily active users. As I mentioned before, a metric can also be calculated from more than one measure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going back to our spatial example, the United States contains 2.43 billion acres. Keep in mind, with this example you could either simply receive a report of the measurement of acreage OR you could calculate it using the formula I just provided, making it a calculated metric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking back at our more practical example, let\u2019s return to the Data Product Manager. Imagine now that the application has a 19% retention rate. The unit value here is 19%, and the metric is the <\/span><b>retention rate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Let\u2019s explore how you\u2019d use this with a business example.\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing you need to realize is that you DESIGN a KPI in order to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/narrativescience.com\/resource\/blog\/how-we-write-technical-design-documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gauge your progress towards your desired result<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to design a good KPI, you have to start first by defining<\/span><b> its five core ingredients.<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Business Objective: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the desired business result.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Unit of Measure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the metrics you use to describe the progress you&#8217;re making towards the desired business result.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Current Unit Value: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the value that your metric assumes today.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Target Unit Value: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the value your metric assumes, once you&#8217;ve reached the desired business result.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>KPI Title: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you should title your KPIs according to the metrics you&#8217;ve used to measure them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s dive into an example of a KPI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"nopin\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9074 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/data-mania.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/example-kpi-1024x576.png\" alt=\"how do you measure KPI?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.data-mania.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/example-kpi-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.data-mania.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/example-kpi-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.data-mania.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/example-kpi-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.data-mania.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/example-kpi-90x51.png 90w, https:\/\/www.data-mania.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/example-kpi-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.data-mania.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/example-kpi-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/www.data-mania.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/example-kpi-1154x649.png 1154w, https:\/\/www.data-mania.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/example-kpi.png 1920w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 500px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 500\/281;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we take the retention rate example, imagine that your target unit value was 19%. But the current unit value falls short at just 17%. In this case,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> the desired business result hasn\u2019t been met<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a Data Product Manager, you\u2019re going to be getting a thumbs down from your superiors in terms of progress results!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any discussion about the difference between metrics, KPIs, and key results would be impossible without first introducing you to the concept of starting unit values. Let\u2019s dig deeper into what exactly that is next, shall we?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are Key Results?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, let&#8217;s look at key results. Key results are very similar to KPIs except for one fundamental difference &#8211; that being the<\/span><b> start unit value.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll use the KPI discussion above to illustrate the difference between key performance indicators and key results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like KPIs, you\u2019ll also need a business objective (AKA, your desired business results) as well as a unit of measure (the metric you use to describe progress towards the business results).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with key results, instead of using the current unit value, you\u2019ll replace that with a <\/span><b>starting unit value.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Starting unit value is the value your metric assumes at the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start time of the period you begin taking action towards reaching your desired business result.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They&#8217;ll also be a target unit value, which is the value of the metric when you&#8217;ve reached your desired business objectives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The title is also a little bit different with key results than with KPIs.
