It\u2019s not that difficult for you to conceptually bridge that gap either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I know? S &#8211; Survey the industry <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where you go around and do a ton of research looking at all the different use cases and case studies, and considering how those might fall into place with your organization\u2019s current set up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. T &#8211; Take stock &amp; inventory of your organization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collect or generate all sorts of documentation that describes the state of your organization as it currently is. This documentation could include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surveys<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interviews\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requests for information<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>3. A &#8211; Assess your organization\u2019s current state conditions<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify gaps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify risks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify opportunities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select an optimal data use case given specifics for your company<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>4. This is where you\u2019ll lay out all of your recommendations and requirements in order to implement the use case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like I said, we are applying MY STAR framework to a data migration strategy building efforts &#8211; so essentially here, our use case has already been chosen for us &#8211; it\u2019s <\/span><b>DATA MIGRATION<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although we\u2019ve already been assigned a use case in this situation &#8211; we still need to apply the STAR framework so we can make sure we have all the project planning in place and that the strategy is feasible for the long term &#8211; say, 18-month future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start looking at how the STAR framework would be applied to a data migration use case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>PHASE 1: S &#8211; SURVEY THE INDUSTRY<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll need to go around and collect a ton of research use cases that document other companies\u2019 experiences with data migration projects. You do this in order to gather ideas of what&#8217;s actually possible and what\u2019s most feasible for your company given its current technology set-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll give you a head start on where to look for these. Nonetheless, it\u2019s very good. Check it out <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/redirect?event=video_description&amp;redir_token=QUFFLUhqbUV6cGZ3U3B3eGJKcXJuc1JLRzhOX0dxX25WUXxBQ3Jtc0tsWUlqSGJfQjNpMldidUdZVl90TXVyQU5NMmw1RVJqaVBlWEtnTEFMaEw0UUppODBvYlAxQTd6T1hYcXpYUm1NeXhyeWQtZnhvbkUxU2pTSXFGbDZobUNTNVR1Vy1ybElDZHo5dE1mZWFIanljRkdzOA&amp;q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.experian.co.uk%2Fassets%2Fdata-quality%2Fdata-migration-checklist.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I mentioned earlier, I strive for all of my content to be completely vendor-agnostic &#8211; which of course is a big reason why I recommend you to survey the industry and look at use cases and case studies before trying to decide what technologies to use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>PHASE 2 &#8211; T- TAKE STOCK &amp; INVENTORY OF YOUR ORGANIZATION<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, this information-gathering phase will involve <\/span><b>surveys, interviews and requests for information.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 5 main categories of information you\u2019ll need to collect:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s dig a little deeper into what you\u2019d want to inventory if you were preparing to develop a data migration strategy<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Specifications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; You\u2019ll need a target mapping specification. This documents high-level objects and relationships that will be linked during the migration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Policies:<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll need a configuration management policy &#8211; this policy will document how data migration project resources will be managed. You\u2019ll want to make sure that you\u2019re thoroughly assessing these elements when building an evergreen data migration strategy. These elements include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><b>Gaps, Risks &amp; Opportunities<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll need to produce a preliminary structured task workflow. This will help you identify:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaps in budget and skill sets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaps in knowledge or on-hand training resources<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaps, opportunities and risks within data skill sets, tools and resources<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><b>Privileges and Securities<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll need to assess what type of security issues are likely to arise during your data migration project. You\u2019ll also want to look at your access rights and make sure you have everything you need, if not, you\u2019ll need to put requests into place<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><b>Processes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll need to create the following processes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data quality management process &#8211; you\u2019ll need to decide what type of processes you need to put in place in order to preserve your data quality rules as you work in the data migration project.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk management process<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; you have to decide\u00a0 what measures you need to put in place in order to record and resolve risks as they occur.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><b>Project Management <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to do the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project estimates &#8211; you need to estimate how much time you have and how long it takes to complete the data migration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Target mapping assessment and retirement strategy<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to have a plan in place on how to educate users about where to retrieve or access their data once the old system is decommissioned.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assess relevant stakeholders on any issues that could arise among them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Produce conceptual and logical models &#8211; these communicate and define the structure of the legacy and target environments. You want to make sure that these models are logical and easy to understand because they serve as fundamental communication tools between all team members and stakeholders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><b>Engineering <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll have to take a look at the hardware and software in order to assess and evaluate how you can make optimal use of your company\u2019s existing data technologies, skill sets and data resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>PHASE 4: R &#8211; RECOMMEND A STRATEGY FOR REACHING FUTURE-STATE GOALS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where you\u2019re going to produce a lot of deliverables for your data strategy action plan.
