It\u2019s a great way to get your feet wet, work with different clients, and see what sort of projects you excel at. Some new freelancers tend to set their rate slightly lower as they rack up experience, and they\u2019ll be pretty keen to take on any project to build up their portfolio, testimonials, and get their name out there as a freelance data professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this is all fine and dandy in the beginning, <\/span><b>you don\u2019t want to stay in this stage too long if you want to charge premium prices for your data services.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to take your business to the next level, you\u2019ll have to ask yourself questions like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do I want to specialize in?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What sort of clients do I want to work with?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What kind of unique processes can I create to produce the best results for my clients?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretty soon after you start your business, you\u2019ll want to specialize in a certain area of data science so that you can become seen as the go-to expert for that service and command those higher rates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When clients hire experts, they expect to pay a higher price, but they also expect that you\u2019ll have your own processes and solutions for solving their problem<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as opposed to them than having to spend ample time hand-holding or training someone less experienced!).<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you present yourself as an expert in your niche, and that your marketing materials and client processes reflect your experienced nature!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SECRET #2: Believe it or not, you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*can\u2019t*<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and shouldn\u2019t!) do it all on your own.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As data pro\u2019s, we\u2019re often used to being the do-ers. However, I often see this attitude holding new data entrepreneurs back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The truth is: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just because you\u2019re ABLE to do something in your business, doesn\u2019t necessarily mean you should.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, you\u2019re smart and totally capable of doing certain tasks within your business and I\u2019m sure you\u2019d do a fantastic job at them&#8230;but you have to ask yourself, as a CEO, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is this really the best use of my time?\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>A lot of the time, the answer is no.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>While sometimes the answer is delegating, other times the answer is automating by improving your tech and processes. They want to keep their profit margins high, and so they think hiring someone who offers the most \u2018bang for their buck\u2019 is the smartest business decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The reality?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCheap\u201d service providers often end up costing you more in the long run than if you\u2019d just found someone quality in the first place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the example of my chatbot, I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have outsourced to a cheap freelancer or rallied an intern or college student willing to put my bot together for pennies (or free).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what would that have cost in my time? What would that have cost if they made a mistake (and I had to do it over again?) What would it have cost in the mental energy wondering if they were doing things properly?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, the \u201cexpensive\u201d option is usually actually less costly.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When building your dream team, you should actually look to hire team members who know <\/span><b><i>more <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than you do in their respective fields, true experts in their own realm that are going to elevate your business, rather than relying on interns or cheap freelancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re just starting out your freelance data career, I recommend you focus all your efforts on mastering the first secret I shared &#8211; <\/span><b><i>showing up as an expert.\u00a0 <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By refusing to compete on price and focusing your energy on creating high-level processes, you\u2019ll attract high-end clients and you can begin to charge premium prices. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a couple of freelance clients under your belt and you\u2019re looking to get to that next level by building out your team, remember the second and third points I shared &#8211; focus on getting support and make sure that support is <\/span><b>high-quality. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are well supported, you\u2019ll be able to get out of the weeds of implementation and step into your CEO shoes, where you can strategize on how to increase business revenues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>No matter WHAT level you&#8217;re at &#8211; whether you&#8217;re more advanced or just starting out &#8211; it&#8217;s important to set yourself up with a <strong>solid foundation<\/strong> by creating <strong>systems in your business.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Don&#8217;t wait until your overloaded with clients to get your tech and systems set up to allow you to scale!
