After all, working remotely is what us digital-centric folk do best!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, <\/span><b>many people are struggling in these rollercoaster times to land jobs and kick-start their careers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s just another Thursday. Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic I\u2019m working from home, like most people the world over. I\u2019m starting to lose hope we\u2019ll be allowed out again anytime over the next 6 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my Instagram stories, I see that my friend (let\u2019s call her \u201cCindy\u201d) is struggling. She shares videos of her fifth day in a hospital room with other infected patients. Times are tough. My brain does a complete 180-degree turn from \u201cyou\u2019re locked up\u201d to \u201cyou should be more grateful. At least you have work to do from home. Apply &amp; Follow Up Flawlessly\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding the role and the hiring manager is your groundwork &#8212; but now comes the execution. These are the four key sections your letter needs to have, and they go a little something like this:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>ATTENTION<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>This is the header of your letter.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It needs to be highly relevant to the position description, so make sure you go back and review that before you start writing. To capture the hiring manager\u2019s attention, you\u2019ll need to write a statement that touches on key competencies mentioned in the job description. For example, if the role is for a software developer and seeks someone with all the usual technical abilities, but also mentions \u201cteam building\u201d and \u201cmentoring\u201d competencies, then your attention statement should make it clear that you ARE that very specific piece of the puzzle they\u2019ve been looking for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to do this?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way is to do a little research and<\/span><b> find a really interesting, attention-grabbing statistic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the importance of teamwork in software development. Something like:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSoftware developers have been shown to be 58% more productive in their work when involved in company team-building activities.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, this isn\u2019t a real statistic, but try and find one relevant to the role you\u2019re applying for and lead with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>INTEREST<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is your chance to <\/span><b>show not only your experience but also your confidence as an expert in the industry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this section, you should write two to three sentences offering a deeper understanding of the field and the type of work and pain points relevant to the job description.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the sample software development role, for example, I might write about:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The value of having excellent technical skills<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The value of team building in software development<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This helps show off my knowledge and to re-emphasize how well I tick off their key competencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>DESIRE<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s your chance to make them want you. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to strike the right balance in a cover letter between enough detail to sound credible and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so much detail <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the hiring manager\u2019s eyes glaze over!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could phrase the section a little something like this:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[line]<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithout burrowing down too much into the technical detail of how I\u2019ve used my development skills to optimize operations for X corporation (or Y college, if you\u2019re fresh out of school), here are some results that speak for themselves:\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><strong>I saved $X per month for Y corporation by [\u2026]<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><strong>X man hours per month were decreased at Y corporation due to the work I did with [&#8230;], providing a return of $X per year.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[line]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By offering these insights, you help the hiring managers to see that you are conscious that it\u2019s the business\u2019s bottom line that\u2019s at stake, and that you\u2019re able to get them results in terms of dollars and cents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This section is also a great place to link to your portfolio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>ACTION<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is your last chance to impress.
