Through all of the tumult, the tech space has remained steady and <\/span>Big Tech is stronger than ever<\/span><\/a>. After all, working remotely is what us digital-centric folk do best!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Still, <\/span>many people are struggling in these rollercoaster times to land jobs and kick-start their careers<\/b>. There are plenty of jobs out there — but grads and career changers often don\u2019t realize the plethora of job-hunting \u201chacks\u201d or strategies<\/a> at their disposal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n I know that these sorts of strategies are needed because <\/span>I see the job-hunt struggle firsthand — <\/b>every. single. day.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Day 54 of my lockdown, for example. It\u2019s just another Thursday. Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic I\u2019m working from home, like most people the world over. I\u2019m starting to lose hope we\u2019ll be allowed out again anytime over the next 6 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n In my Instagram stories, I see that my friend (let\u2019s call her \u201cCindy\u201d) is struggling. She shares videos of her fifth day in a hospital room with other infected patients. Times are tough. My brain does a complete 180-degree turn from \u201cyou\u2019re locked up\u201d to \u201cyou should be more grateful. At least you have work to do from home. Yes, employment is uncertain across many sectors. Pay special attention to advertisements from the following industries; they\u2019re not only surviving through COVID-19, they\u2019re thriving in spite of it:<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The majority of these businesses will advertise via LinkedIn for new staff, and I\u2019m a <\/span>firm believer<\/span><\/i> in LinkedIn as THE PLACE for tech job hunters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n But how do you use it to best effect?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Here are the THREE KEY ACTIONS you can take on LinkedIn <\/b>today <\/i><\/b>to improve your job hunting strategy.<\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n There\u2019s more to LinkedIn than meets the eye. <\/span>Finding the right role is actually half your battle.<\/b> There is zero point in applying for jobs that simply aren\u2019t the right fit for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Here\u2019s one way I narrow things down in LinkedIn to find more relevant, appropriate positions:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n First, click on the \u201cJobs\u201d section. Then, in the search bar, <\/span>type in the keyword associated with the primary role you\u2019re able to perform<\/b>. For example, I would choose to search for \u201cData Scientist.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Once you\u2019ve hit \u201cSearch\u201d on your job title, you\u2019ll want to filter the results to best effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Weed out jobs that have been sitting around for too long.<\/b> These are roles that have probably had a large number of applicants already, and hiring managers may already be conducting interviews for them. <\/span>Insist on applying for old jobs? You\u2019re wasting your time.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Make sure you\u2019re seeing only fresh roles by setting the \u201c<\/span>Date Posted<\/b>\u201d filter to \u201c<\/span>Past Week<\/b>.\u201d This is particularly important in the current environment, when many companies have put a freeze on hiring. By choosing to see only those jobs posted in the past week or so, you\u2019ll know the hiring companies are still going strong and are still wanting — in spite of everything — to hire new talent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Next, <\/span>try to find roles that have fewer applicants<\/b>. This way, you\u2019ve got a much better chance of rising to the top of the pack and being seen by those doing the hiring! Click on the \u201cLinkedIn Features\u201d button and select the \u201cUnder 10 Applicants\u201d option to filter the results.<\/span><\/p>\n Finally, you can <\/span>find roles better suited to your level of experience<\/b> by sorting the results to suit. Just click the \u201cExperience Level\u201d button and select the options that best describe your expertise. If you\u2019re just graduating and starting out, I\u2019d choose the \u201cEntry level\u201d and \u201cAssociate\u201d options.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In this screen grab of a .Net developer job, you can see that I have seven connections already working at JPMorgan Chase & Co. If I know even one of these people enough to reach out to him or her, I can leverage that relationship and get help finding the name and contact details of the hiring manager responsible for any given role.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why is that important? <\/span>Knowing your audience is 100% of the work you need to do NOW so you can execute a perfect job application in Step 3<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n When considering each job post, first try and get an idea of the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Your next step is to click on the name of the company that is hiring, and <\/span>take a look at their \u201cPeople\u201d section.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n When you\u2019re there, click \u201cshow more\u201d on the \u201cWhere they live\u201d section, and <\/span>look for the city mentioned in the job listing<\/b> you were interested in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n When you\u2019ve found that city, click on it, and then <\/span>scroll through the employees, looking for the person whose job title seems to indicate he or she might be the hiring manager<\/b> for the company in that particular location.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Write down this person\u2019s name and copy the link to his or her profile page. You\u2019ll want to keep these contacts on hand when you come to writing up your cover letter and applying for roles.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n In this step, you\u2019ll take the following 3 actions:<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The success of your follow-up is entirely linked to the quality of your cover letter. <\/b>I want to teach you how to tackle this part of the job hunt because it\u2019s the part SO many people do last, and do wrong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The secret to a good cover letter?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n And no, I\u2019m not talking about the opera by Verdi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n AIDA, at least in my world, stands for: <\/span>Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action<\/b>. These are the four key sections your letter needs to have, and they go a little something like this:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This is the header of your letter.<\/b> It needs to be highly relevant to the position description, so make sure you go back and review that before you start writing. To capture the hiring manager\u2019s attention, you\u2019ll need to write a statement that touches on key competencies mentioned in the job description. For example, if the role is for a software developer and seeks someone with all the usual technical abilities, but also mentions \u201cteam building\u201d and \u201cmentoring\u201d competencies, then your attention statement should make it clear that you ARE that very specific piece of the puzzle they\u2019ve been looking for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n How to do this?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n One way is to do a little research and<\/span> find a really interesting, attention-grabbing statistic<\/b> about the importance of teamwork in software development. Something like:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cSoftware developers have been shown to be 58% more productive in their work when involved in company team-building activities.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Now, this isn\u2019t a real statistic, but try and find one relevant to the role you\u2019re applying for and lead with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This is your chance to <\/span>show not only your experience but also your confidence as an expert in the industry<\/b>. In this section, you should write two to three sentences offering a deeper understanding of the field and the type of work and pain points relevant to the job description.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n For the sample software development role, for example, I might write about:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n This helps show off my knowledge and to re-emphasize how well I tick off their key competencies.<\/span><\/p>\n Here\u2019s your chance to make them want you. <\/b>It\u2019s important to strike the right balance in a cover letter between enough detail to sound credible and <\/span>so much detail <\/span><\/i>the hiring manager\u2019s eyes glaze over!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n You could phrase the section a little something like this:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n [line]<\/p>\n \u201cWithout burrowing down too much into the technical detail of how I\u2019ve used my development skills to optimize operations for X corporation (or Y college, if you\u2019re fresh out of school), here are some results that speak for themselves:\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n [line]<\/p>\n By offering these insights, you help the hiring managers to see that you are conscious that it\u2019s the business\u2019s bottom line that\u2019s at stake, and that you\u2019re able to get them results in terms of dollars and cents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n This section is also a great place to link to your portfolio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This is your last chance to impress.
