They\u2019re household staples for product marketers, and they&#8217;re actually quite useful as features in MMM. We\u2019ll use them as part of the \u201cmarketing mix\u201d in the discussion that follows.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>What is Marketing Mix Modeling?<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, if you aren\u2019t quite sure what MMM is exactly, I recommend you go back and review last week&#8217;s blog post on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/data-mania.com\/blog\/marketing-mix-modeling-explained\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marketing Mix Modeling Explained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Marketing Mix Modeling TL;DR Version<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, for MMM, you want to take those 4 Ps and evaluate how that mixture of marketing attributes directly impacts profitability. The model you\u2019d use to make that prediction (or set of predictions) is what\u2019s commonly referred to as a \u201cmarketing mix model\u201d.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And marketing mix modeling? That\u2019s simply the act of taking historical sales and marketing data, and using statistical methods to build a model from that data in order to uncover statistically (and economically) significant relationships between your marketing mix and sales.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve ascertained those relationships, you\u2019ll be able to predict future sales and tweak your company\u2019s marketing plans accordingly.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>What\u2019s the Catch? &#8211; <em>Inserting 4 Ps into Marketing Mix Modeling Algorithms<\/em><\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thing is though, you can\u2019t just plug the 4 Ps into marketing mix modeling algorithms and be done with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First you need to know which are the best marketing mix modeling algorithms, and then you need to understand how the 4 Ps behave, as well as what to choose for explanatory and response variables for a MMM model. The most common approaches include multiple linear regression and Bayesian methods.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Multiple Linear Regression<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common type of machine learning algorithm that&#8217;s used in MMM is multiple linear regression. For example, if you\u2019re working with sparse data, you\u2019re at risk of model-overfitting if you use regression. Also, as you\u2019re about to see in our discussion of MMM variables, there is quite a bit of dependency between variables that go into a marketing mix. Since that dependence defies model assumptions for multiple linear regression, you may be forced to take another approach.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these cases, you can try out Bayesian statistics to model your marketing mix. The advantage of taking a Bayesian approach is that it allows you to interject your domain expertise to guide the model in the most logical direction. If you\u2019d like to learn more using Bayesian modeling for MMM, I suggest you read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/analyticsindiamag.com\/all-you-need-to-know-about-bayesian-marketing-mix-modeling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this article here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always with machine learning, predictive success is directly correlated with how well you understand the data you&#8217;re modeling. With that, let\u2019s turn to the variables you\u2019d use in MMM and how those variables behave.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>The Response Variables Are Pretty Obvious\u2026<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since you are using MMM to predict and optimize profits, the main response variables you\u2019d want to consider are:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Number of Sales\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sales Revenue ($)\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h2><b>Explanatory Variables for Modeling the 4 Ps<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s do a quick overview of what explanatory variables would be appropriate to represent each of the variables in a MMM model.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Product<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This refers to the product that is being sold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h4><b>How Product data behaves<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors that impact how the product variable behaves include product quality, ease-of-use (ie; \u201cusability\u201d), and buyer expectations vs customer satisfaction. Basically &#8211; if your product sucks, then it doesn\u2019t matter how you price or promote it &#8211; your buyers aren\u2019t going to be happy, sales will falter, and selling it will eventually tarnish your company\u2019s brand.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re selling services, you could technically use a \u201cservice package\u201d as the product here. In that case, you\u2019ll probably want to extend out to a 7Ps approach: By adding variables that represent process, people, and physical evidence.<\/span><\/p><h4><b>Explanatory variables you can use to represent Product in your MMM<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MMM variables you can use to model Product in your mix include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(in order of decreasing impact on total sales)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Product quality<\/b><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in terms of constituency &#8211; % of a desirable attribute<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when it comes to \u201cdurability\u201d &#8211; product life span in days<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in terms of conformance to manufacturing requirements &#8211; risk priority number<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Product newness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (days on the market)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h3><b>Price<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The price variable is simply the price at which the product sells.<\/span><\/p><h4><b>How the Price variable behaves<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are lots of different pricing strategies out there, but the main thing to remember here is that <\/span><b>you don\u2019t want to be in a race to the bottom.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The price should reflect the value that the product provides its buyer, as well as how much supply there is to meet its demand\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of lowering prices, look for ways to increase the value of the product and improve your marketing messaging to enhance the product&#8217;s positioning.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, as prices increase, sales volumes decrease &#8211; so your distribution numbers (as represented by \u201cplace\u201d variables) would decrease, but you could end up getting an increase in sales revenues anyway\u2026. That\u2019s one of the reasons it\u2019s important to include both price and distribution in the marketing mix.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, when you drop prices you tend to get more sales, but the buyers are generally higher maintenance customers &#8211; this actually erodes the profitability of the product, because you\u2019ll get more customers that all tend to require more support services which will have to be paid for out of the operations budget.. How widely is the product being distributed?<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Distribution per unit time<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of \u201cDistribution\u201d &#8211;
